Principal Software Engineer - Document Processing (US Remote)

Full-time$165k–180k / yrWorldwide

Job Description

TREND Health Partners is a tech-enabled payment integrity company. Our mission is to facilitate collaboration between payers and providers for mutual benefit and waste reduction, ultimately improving access to healthcare. We achieve this by aligning the common goals of payers and providers and fostering collaboration through a shared technology platform and seamless workflows.

Joining TREND Health Partners means becoming part of a dynamic, growing organization that promotes a collaborative and innovative work environment.

The Principal Software Engineer will lead the development of innovative, scalable software solutions that support complex document review workflows for healthcare payers and providers. This role requires a deep understanding of modern web application architecture and cloud-native backend systems. The engineer will collaborate closely with architects, product, QA, and cloud teams to drive system-wide design decisions, optimize platform performance, and deliver new capabilities to our customers.

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical leadership, a hands-on approach to coding, and the ability to mentor other engineers while ensuring alignment with architectural standards and business goals.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead the evolution of our document processing pipeline: designing Step Functions state machines, writing the modular Go services that run inside them, and defining contracts that let workflow steps be swapped in and out cleanly.
  • Own the hard problems around processing real-world PDFs reliably at scale — malformed input, structural variance, and performance across documents from a few pages to tens of thousands.
  • Build out operational metrics and observability — starting with the document pipeline, extending to other platform areas as needs surface.
  • Take a concept from "here's roughly the problem" to a shipped, working solution with minimal hand-holding.
  • Mentor and grow the other engineers working in this space, and advocate for the pipeline's forward progress.
  • Contribute to database design and query performance across our Postgres/RDS environment.
  • Work with OpenSearch for indexing and search functionality tied to document data.
  • Support the wider platform ecosystem beyond the core pipeline as needs come up.
  • Review code, weigh in on architecture, and help set technical direction for the team.
  • Partner with product and engineering leads to turn loose requirements into real technical designs.

Qualifications

  • Documented professional software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and operating production systems — we're looking at what you've built and owned, not just tenure.
  • A habit of taking ownership of the problem space, driving the solution, and standing behind your decisions. We don't do blame here — when something goes wrong, we own it, learn, and move forward.
  • Strong Go experience, particularly for backend/service work.
  • Hands-on experience with document processing at scale — you understand PDF structure and edge cases well enough to reason about performance, reliability, and failure modes across variable real-world input.
  • Experience designing and implementing metrics and observability for production systems — deciding what should be measured and building it, not just consuming dashboards someone else built.
  • Comfort with AWS serverless patterns: Lambda, Step Functions, ECS, and event-driven architecture generally.
  • Solid database fundamentals — schema design, query optimization, troubleshooting performance issues.
  • A track record of driving something from an ambiguous starting point to a finished product.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound calls without a lot of oversight.
  • Strong communication — you'll need to explain tradeoffs to engineers and non-engineers alike.
  • Experience mentoring engineers day to day — not just leaving comments in code review, but actively growing the people around you.
  • Comfort handling sensitive data (PHI) responsibly and in line with HIPAA requirements.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in C++ — not required, but a plus given some of our high-performance pipeline segments are written in it.
  • Interest or experience in Rust — not currently in use, but on the table for future performance-critical pipeline work.
  • Hands-on OpenSearch (or Lucene-based search) experience. This space doesn't have a dedicated owner today — if it's a strength of yours, there's a real opportunity to take charge of it.
  • Experience with document-centric pipelines (OCR, classification, extraction, or similar).
  • Healthcare or payment-integrity industry background.
  • Comfort using agentic coding tools as part of a modern dev workflow.A Note on CultureWe're a laid-back team — plenty of memes, self-managed accountability, low ceremony. We care more about whether the work is good and the pipeline is reliable than about how you got there. We're Mac-shop, and we lean on modern tooling (including AI-assisted coding) without letting it replace engineering judgment.

Mental and Physical Demands

  • This position will be exposed mainly to an indoor office environment and will be expected to work in or around computers and printers.
  • The nature of the work is sedentary, and the employee will be sitting most of the time.
  • Essential physical functions of the job include typing and the repetitive motion to utilize computer software and hardware continuously throughout the day.
  • Essential mental functions of this position include concentrating on analytical tasks, reading information, and verbal/written communication to others continuously throughout the day.

  • This job description documents the general nature and level of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of activities, duties, or responsibilities required for this position. Consequently, employee’s may be asked to perform other duties as required.
